Providing healthy, nutritious food in a cost-effective way to isolated First Nation communities in the Far North continues to be a problem — for the federal government as well as for the people who live there.

A new report shows that some First Nations families in Northern Ontario are forced to spend more than half their income on food just to meet basic nutritional requirements.

So what is the answer, as transportation costs continue to rise as does the cost of perishable food.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox claims the federal government needs to do more and give First Nations more control over subsidies.
