Manitoba Expected to See Big Rise in Diabetes Rates – 880 CKLQ

Diabetes is on the rise in Manitoba.

The Canadian Diabetes Association says the number of Manitobans who will get the disease will rise by 35% over the next decade.

Brandon Westman Coordinator John LoRegio tells CKLQ a healthy lifestyle is a huge factor.

“Type 2 diabetes, if you’re prediabetic, can be prevented simply by watching your weight and diet.”

LoRegio that First Nations, Metis, and Inuit are more likely to be diagnosed with Type 2 at a younger age.

121,000 people were living with the disease in 2016, that number is expected to rise to 125,000 this year.

The CDA in the report highlighted 3 recommendations for government, they include supplying an insulin pump to all eligible medical patient regardless of age.
