A week after his 12-year-old niece was buried in Wapekeka First Nation, an emotional Joshua Frogg held her glove in his hand Thursday as he and First Nations leaders accused the federal government of failing to support a suicide prevention program that might have saved her life.
Last week, two 12-year-old girls, Frogg’s niece, Chantel Fox, and Jolynn Winter, died by suicide just a few days apart in the remote northern Ontario community. Another 26 children from the community are now considered at a high risk of suicide.
Wapekeka, he said, is in a state of shock.
“To many people, they are just names. For those of us that live in the community, those are our children, those are our future, those are our legacy.”
