Two researchers at the Health Sciences North Research Institute and Laurentian University have received a total of $1 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to research First Nation dementia in Canada.
Dr. Janet McElhaney is getting $500,000 to use a community-based approach that will combine First Nation practices with Western technologies to help caregivers in First Nation communities to better support older adults in their communities who have dementia. McElhaney is vice-president of research and scientific director at the Health Sciences North Research Institute, and Medical Lead for Seniors Care at Health Sciences North
Dr. Jennifer Walker, meanwhile, will receive $500,000 to develop a Canadian Indigenous Cognitive Assessment Tool for widespread use and to lay a foundation for a national study of dementia in First Nation populations. Walker is Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Health and an adjunct professor at the School of Rural and Northern Health at Laurentian University.
