A new scientific report released Tuesday presents “strong evidence” that a Dryden mill site may still be releasing mercury into the Wabigoon River upstream from Grassy Narrows and two other First Nations.
Mercury levels in the top layers of sediment have been found to increase by 130 times as the river passes the Dryden mill site, according to the report.
Grassy Narrows Chief Simon Fobister says the report suggests there is ongoing mercury contamination from the former Dryden paper mill which was decommissioned years ago.
The researchers behind the report say that mercury levels downstream of the plant should have returned to normal by now in the absence of leaks.
