Program’s furthest food delivery is more than 200 km by plane

For many remote communities in Alberta, food accessibility is a major challenge due to issues like limited transportation options and a lack of full-service grocery stores.

But in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northeastern Alberta, a unique mobile pantry program is transporting hampers and food vouchers to remote communities spread across the sprawling region.

The program is run by the Wood Buffalo Food Bank in Fort McMurray. It’s example of the types of programs that are key to helping far-flung communities deal with food scarcity and higher prices, said Shawna Bissell, executive director of Food Banks Alberta.
