The mental health of Indigenous Peoples is not only an Indigenous issue. It is a Canadian issue and a global issue as Indigenous knowledge is the knowledge of our world.
As a physician and researcher, I know the brain is designed for resilience and healing. But when trauma severs our connections to family, culture, and community, its impact can echo across generations. To me, in my 25 years practicing psychiatry, nowhere is this more evident than in the mental health challenges faced by the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
