A new study on economic well-being reveals that younger households are at greater risk due to the COVID-19 pandemic since they depend more on wages and salaries, face higher housing costs, have higher debt relative to income, work in industries deeply affected by the pandemic, and have less equity to draw upon when needed.
Survey of Non-Bank Mortgage Lenders, second quarter 2020
Although the pandemic has caused unprecedented economic and social disruptions since mid-March, the housing market in many parts of the country remained strong. This was reflected by the higher number of residential mortgages (+16.4%) that non-bank lenders extended in the second quarter, compared with the same quarter a year earlier. In response to COVID-19, many non-bank lenders provided relief to borrowers through mortgage deferrals, reporting 100,372 mortgages deferred—for a value of $25.4 billion.

Maple production soars to a new high in 2020, despite the pandemic
Canadian maple producers harvested 14.3 million gallons of maple syrup in 2020, surpassing the 2019 record of 13.2 million gallons produced by 8.3%. The increased production resulted in total sales of $558.5 million in 2020, up 7.9% from a year earlier. To limit the spread of COVID-19 in the early stages of the pandemic, producers in Quebec implemented new processes affecting the delivery of maple syrup barrels, equipment cleaning and inter-regional transportation.

An updated set of preliminary data on the number of confirmed novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases reported by provincial and territorial public health authorities to the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is now available. Along with this dataset are two aggregated tables that summarize the information available in the dataset. The updated information covers the period from January 15 to December 6, 2020.
