Montreal, August 25, 2011 – Olympian Waneek Horn-Miller launches Working it Out Together www.workingitouttogether.com, a national multi-platform health and wellness movement in response to the increasing rates of diabetes and obesity in Canada, especially among the Aboriginal population. Based on Aboriginal philosophy, traditional foods, and western medical practice, Working it Out Together, combines technology and social interaction, via a documentary series and interactive website to motivate Canadians and their communities towards health and wellness.
The six-part series documents the intimate stories of six Mohawk individuals as they embark on a challenging journey towards a better lifestyle -reclaiming their vitality through health, wellness, and fitness.
“Bringing Indigenous notions of wellness to the mainstream is part of the goal of the series,” says Horn-Miller. “When we learn and live our own teachings of wellness and health, we begin to turn our own lives around. It’s not about drastic measures to lose weight, but rather to live a more balanced, healthier life.”
Complementing the series is www.workingitouttogether.com, an interactive motivational website designed to help audiences track their progress and understand the importance of balance when setting out to make lifestyle changes.
“Achieving wellness is often presented as a one-sided endeavor,” says Kim Ross, Digital Media Producer, “focusing on a single overwhelming goal such as weight loss, or exercise. What makes this site unique is that it encourages users to set simple, realistic goals in the areas of Body, Mind, Food and Social practices and clearly illustrates how they are all connected. It’s about enriching your entire self and using technology to find balance and improve your health.”
The online project uses social networking tool Facebook Connect, allowing users to build community and encourage each other to set goals and work it out together. Once logged in, users can earn points by accepting and completing challenges of varying levels of difficulty and commitment from the four categories. The goal is to maintain a balanced amount of points in each category in order to progress to the next level – Farmville meets The Biggest Loser, minus the humiliation and hours logged in front of a computer.
This project is produced by Rezolution Pictures International and interactive partner Chocolate Liberation Front. It is funded by the Canadian Media Fund and the OMDC’s tax credits with support from APTN.
