Aboriginal Nutrition Professionals aim to Revitalize Connections
Thunder Bay, ON – The 2nd National Gathering of the Aboriginal Nutrition Network takes place next week at Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay from May 13 – 14, 2014.
A two day gathering will celebrate Revitalizing Connections around food, culture, traditional knowledge, science and professional practice. The opening keynote presentation includes Dr. Ian Mosby and Dr. Cynthia Wesley-Esquimaux, examining the ethics surrounding nutrition research that was conducted in residential schools in the 1940s and1950s and how the nutrition profession can reconcile and move forward from such a tragedy. Food connects us in spirit and in health. The closing keynote is Bossy Ducharme who will discuss his journey of living and reclaiming an ancestral diet.
A focus on networking and revitalizing connections will enable participants to learn, share and enhance their role providing nutrition care in communities they work with. A reciprocity circle will be facilitated whereby delegates will experience the group’s giving capacity leaning in on one another to gain support in areas to enhance their practice. Good nutrition is part of the foundation to wellbeing and integral to enhancing the health of First Nations, Inuit and Metis in Canada.
Other central issues such as food security, re-establishing traditional food ways, culturally safe nutrition programming, nutrition’s role in chronic disease, community engagement and capacity building; will be the focus of a number of concurrent sessions.
Attendance is geared towards dietitians, nutrition professionals, community health workers, academics and non-profit organizations working with First Nations, Inuit and Metis Communities championing nutrition and health.
