The Government of Québec hears the call of Nunavik households

Partial freezing of rents

Kuujjuaq, July 22, 2014 -. Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs and Member of Ungava, Jean Boucher, today announced that the Government of Quebec had to file a draft amendments to the conditions rental housing for low-rental Nunavik. The proposed amendments are intended to partially suspend the 8% increase in the maximum rent for a non-renewable period of one year or until such time that a new level of rent is established. This increase was due to enter into force on 1 st July for Inuit households, the cost of rent is not fixed in proportion to income.

“Recognizing that housing conditions are particularly difficult for Nunavik communities, our government has been listening to requests from stakeholders and households in the region. This measure will provide an extra margin of middle-income households to financial freedom, for which the rent can not be calculated in proportion to income. This will also help promote fairness compared to the more affluent households that are not covered by this measure, “said MP Ungava, who was accompanied for the occasion, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Land Occupancy and Minister responsible for the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ) and MP for Vimont, Jean Rousselle.

These amendments to the Regulations were pre-published in the Official Gazette of July 9 and will take effect in 45 days.Recall that the most vulnerable households, meanwhile, qualify for a calculation of rent based on their income and were not affected by the increase of 8%. This new measure will allow the SHQ, together with stakeholders, to proceed in the coming months, the revision of the Regulation to review the scale of rents affordable housing and find an equitable solution to the all households in Nunavik.
