McGuinty Government Invests In Healthier Community

The Neskantaga First Nation will have a new focal point for social and economic activity in the community with the support of the Ontario government.The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) is providing $1 million to the Neskantaga First Nation to rebuild its recreation centre. The new facility will provide the community with a venue for social gatherings, feasts, sports activities and other events important to the health and social fabric of this remote community. The multi-purpose complex will also provide office resources to accommodate mineral exploration companies working and consulting with the First Nation.

“The construction of this multi-purpose centre will provide the people of Neskantaga with an important venue to carry out community activities. Furthermore, accommodating mineral exploration companies in the multi-use facility will develop positive relationships that have the potential to lead to new jobs for the people of Neskantaga in the minerals sector,” said Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle, who also chairs the NOHFC.

“This new recreation centre will help improve the lives of Neskatanga First Nation community members,” said Brad Duguid, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs. “Young people especially will be able to participate in more sports, other activities and community events that are critical for good health and well-being.”

>Neskantaga First Nation is a remote, fly-in community of 283 on-reserve and 79 off-reserve members situated approximately 155 kilometres north of Pickle Lake.

>Neskantaga’s original community centre was destroyed by fire in November 2007.
