Homeless need more than a roof over their heads – The Chronicle Journal

Aug 17, 2016.

The Thunder Bay Shelter House executive director knows the organization’s clients need more than just a roof over their heads.

Gary Mack, who has served in the role since March 1, said Shelter House has a number of new initiatives to help provide purpose and a sense of direction.

“What I’ve found is as soon as we give our folks something they’re so grateful for it,” Mack said on Tuesday.

“It’s about giving people something they can care about so they have buy-in and they have ownership. Everybody needs to feel like they’re part of something and that they have a contribution to make. What we’re doing is trying to find ways to engage people and give them an opportunity to be part of something.”

One of those new idea will take place on Saturday when George Street will be closed in front of the shelter to host a street party.
