There is no simple way to balance the economic benefits of casinos with the risk to the health of individuals and wellbeing of a community.
That’s the warning from Fraser Health’s top medical officials as Delta waits for word from the B. C. Lottery Corporation on a gaming facility.
In a recent letter to Mayor Lois Jackson, chief medical health officer Victoria Lee and executive medical director Arlene King touched on information available on problem gambling and access to gambling venues, noting a study two years ago found the number of problem gamblers might have declined since 2008, but the proportion of severe gamblers remains a concern.
