A new study shows diabetes is more widespread among descendants of people who lived in Canada before Europeans arrived than among the general population.

The University of Calgary researchers found, about 8 of 10 First Nations people will develop diabetes at a young age, compared to roughly half of all Canadians. More than 2.25 million people in Canada suffer from the disease.
Researchers are hopeful the study findings will lead to new prevention programs. Risk of diabetes can be reduced by lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.
