Med Students Receive Research Awards

On Thursday afternoon, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) launched its first-annual Founding Dean’s Summer Medical Student Research Awards. Eight charter class students were presented with the awards during a reception held simultaneously at NOSM’s West Campus at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay and at the East Campus at Laurentian University in Sudbury.

These summer research projects will span a broad range of areas, from biomedical studies to social research. The School’s state-of-the-art laboratories were officially opened late last month, during a special ceremony attended by the Honourable Tony Clement, Federal Health Minister and Minister for FedNor.

“Our students are very excited to begin these research projects,” said Dr. Greg Ross, NOSM’s Associate Dean of Research. “Combining placements in Northern communities with conducting important research provides them with critical, hands-on experience.” NOSM’s goal is to respond to the health-care needs of Northern and rural communities, as well as to the Francophone and Aboriginal cultures in the North.
