OTTAWA – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it’s possible that a quarantine on 40 cattle operations in Alberta and Saskatchewan could be expanded.

The chief veterinary officer of the agency says the number will continue to change as test results for bovine tuberculosis come back.

Dr. Harpeet Kochhar announced yesterday that thousands of cattle will be slaughtered to curb the spread of the disease.

He predicts some ten-thousand animals will be destroyed because they’re considered “high risk” for contracting or transmitting the infectious disease.

So far just six cattle have tested positive for bovine T-B since the first case was confirmed in September.

So far, quarantine orders have been issued at more than 40 cattle operations in southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan, affecting more than 22-thousand animals.
