8th World Indigenous Women’ & Wellness Conference: Building on Traditional Wisdom & Knowledge

Dear Friend,

We are delighted to inform you that the Awo Taan Healing Lodge will be hosting the 8th World Indigenous Women’ & Wellness Conference: Building on Traditional Wisdom & Knowledge, Sept. 29th – Oct 1st 2008 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.Historically, Awo Taan Native Women’s Shelter was the first shelter in Alberta where native women and children could seek refuge from family violence and all forms of abuse in a uniquely Aboriginal atmosphere. Appropriately named “Awo Taan”, which means “shield” in the Blackfoot language, the shelter is blanketed in a unique atmosphere where the traditional holistic and spiritual teachings of the Aboriginal people’s are practiced. This approach benefits families from all walks of life and nationalities in helping them through the healing process. Because of the all encompassing services provided by the shelter and its focus on healing and wellness, the name was appropriately changed in 2007. In 2008 Awo Taan Healing Lodge will be celebrating 15 years of successfully providing safety, services and programs to women, men and children from all cultures, who have suffered from abuse.

The first ever National Aboriginal Women’s Summit was hosted this year in Canada bringing Aboriginal women’s issues to the attention and priority of Federal Ministers, Premiers, and Provincial/Territorial Ministers. Now Aboriginal women’s issues are high on Canada’s political agenda and we are looking forward to celebrating the recent and historical successes of Aboriginal women.

In celebration of women’s honor, the conference theme will focus on: Building on Traditional Wisdom & Knowledge within Indigenous families and communities world wide. We are enthusiastically preparing for the 8th World Indigenous Women’s & Wellness Conference. The conference will share success stories on issues of violence and relationships in Indigenous communities and learn from effective strategies that promote wellness in home environment and communities globally.

In an effort to create positive change for all indigenous peoples we invite you to join us at the 8th World Indigenous Women’ & Wellness Conference: “Building on Traditional Wisdom & Knowledge”.

Respectfully,
Josie Nepinak
